Staged Reading for New Satire on Monica Lewinsky Set for June 28

By Randy Gener

A new satirical comedy about l'affaire Lewinsky is hoping to reach Broadway this fall. Brazenly called Starr's on Broadway, the new play is currently receiving several pre-production staged readings by its author Eric Zaccar who is also directing. The next reading is scheduled for June 28.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT ME? A rare topical comedy may be headed for a major production.

Comedy and (more or less) current politics make for strangely perfect bedfellows, of course. In Starr's on Broadway, White House political shenanigans are played for belly laughs and incisive critique, according to a production spokesperson. A statement from the producer describes Zaccar's comedy as "an occasionally off-the-wall often biting social statement that focuses not only in the Clinton/Lewinsky/Starr affair, but leaves no one unscathed from Harry Truman and John Kennedy to Richard Nixon and Lenny Bruce.

Natalie Blalock, who recently made her Broadway debut as an understudy in The Scarlet Pimpernel gets out the kneepads as Monica Lewinsky. "Lateline" television actress Caryl Marder pulls her chin up as Hillary Clinton and heats things up as "the Glow Girl." "Chicago City Limits" headliner Carl Kissin assumes several roles, including Lenny Bruce, Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton. "The Daily Show" comic Tom Shillue takes on Kenneth Starr, LBJ, JFK and Truman. Former Miss Long Island, Miss Westchester and Miss Manhattan Shenan Reed will host the readings.

Starr's on Broadway author/director Eric Zaccar wrote the short musical play The Oedipus Complex which was optioned by the Joseph Papp Public Theatre. He's been a recurring guest on "The Howard Stern Show." Other works include Housing, a full-length play with 20 characters that has gotten staged readings; Superstar, a screenplay that was produced as an indie film; and The Only Trace, another screenplay the only trace of which is that it's currently being "considered for production." Zaccar has also written numerous short stories, teleplays, treatments, comedy sketches, stand-up comedy material, and lyrics to numerous songs that, according to his bio, "have been recorded and performed by a wide variety of musicians and singers."
